The 5th Wave - Rick Yancey

“It’s almost dawn. You can feel it coming. The world holds its breath, because there’s really no guarantee that the sun will rise. That there was a yesterday doesn’t mean there will be a tomorrow.”

This is one of those books that the moment you finish it, you want to turn back to the first page and start all over again. The 5th Wave is a work of genius, a believable narrative of what could happen if aliens thousands of years more advanced than us decided to take an interest in Earth as a colony.

Rick Yancey s descriptive writing creates a world full of mistrust and destruction. No matter which way you turn, there is another problem to contend with, and people are never as they seem. Not only do the alien’s play with the character’s heads, they also play with the reader’s, as we try to ascertain ourselves who is human and who is simply masquerading as human. Yancey gives just the right amount of detail to keep us guessing.

I was a huge fan of the characters in this novel. Their complexity was engaging as well as their flaws. Multiple POVs gave us insight into what was happening in different locations, while also making us question whether the ‘people’ surrounding the characters were good or bad. Or both. Each character is strong in his or her own way (how couldn’t you be after surviving an alien invasion!?), making them relatable to a number of readers.

I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. Write quickly Mr. Yancey!
